In the year
1988 Jaguar presented a mid engine concept supercar at the Birmingham
Motor show, the XJ220. The concept was received very enthusiastic by the
public and the motoring press. Jaguar then decided to give the unplanned
concept the green light. In collaboration with Tom Walkinshaw of TWR
engineering the XJ220 was developed. During the development and design
stage the idea to incorporate a V12 engine was discarded, high emissions
and the size were problematic. Instead the fantastic and reliable
Group-C XJR 10/11 3.5 Litre V6 twin turbo racing engine was adapted for
the XJ220. A wise decision considering it's compactness, weight and
enormous power output of 549 bhp. The chassis and bodywork were made of
aluminium tubing and beautiful curved panels. The suspension was based
on the group-C racing car. The flat underside of the car was also racing
car inspired by the use of venturi's to create a 'sucking' ground effect
under the car. At 320 km/h the maximum ground effect pressed the car to
the road with an additional 272 kg. V6 engine Jaguar XJ220, year 1996. Car number 302. Colour silver metallic with a Smoke Grey Leather interior.
